Computer Virus?
Should I be worried?

Computer Virus.  A small program that can cause BIG damage to your business.  Should you be alert?  Should you worry about it?  How can you prevent viruses?  Before we get into these questions, we must know what a computer virus is.  A computer virus is not something that's airborne.  It is a program written by a person who intentionally cause harm to other computers.  A virus "infects" a computer and duplicates its own program and it can move onto other computers via disk, internet, network... anything that a computer is connected to.

Therefore, if your POS system is just isolated with no internet connection or any disk use, then you have no risk of getting a virus.  However, if your POS system is connected to an internet, network, or have any other form of contact with another computer file, then you are at risk.  You may be able to prevent some computer viruses by being careful with what files you receive.  But the only way to effectively prevent computer virus is to use an Anti-Virus Program.  The following programs are the most popular Anti-Virus softwares.

  • Norton AntiVirus - The most superior protection against on both known and unknown viruses.  The best protection money can buy.  But the program uses a lot of memory and slows down your computer's performance.

  • McAfee VirusScan - McAfee uses less memory and barely slows down your computer while protecting you against both known and unknown viruses.  It also utilizes the Internet.  With its low price, it's definitely the best value you can get for your budget.

  • Trend PC-Cillan - New to the whole Anti-Virus deal?  Trend has a very easy-to-use interface that any beginner could use.  It also provides protections against known and unknown viruses.

  • McAfee VirusScan (DOS) - For you people with DOS, this is for you.  Features protection against all sorts of viruses, including unknown ones.  And it supports DOS with features to keep your system immune from viruses.
